However, that’s kind of what embassies are for, where if you need some help, you can always try your country’s embassy in the country that you’re visiting. The good news for US citizens who are traveling in Austria is that if you need some help, a partnership between McDonald’s Austria and the US Embassy in Vienna will make it easier to do so.
According to the post made on Facebook, “American citizens traveling in Austria who find themselves in distress and without a way to contact the U.S. Embassy can enter – as of Wednesday, May 15, 2019 – any McDonald’s in Austria, and staff will assist them in making contact with the U.S. Embassy for consular services (e.g. report a lost or stolen passport, or seek travel assistance).”
This does not mean that you’ll actually receive help replacing your passport at a McDonald’s, but rather staff at the fast food stores will help you get in touch with consular staff. It feels a bit like a novel idea, but given how widespread McDonald’s is, it actually makes a lot of sense.
