LG’s take on the foldable smartphone trend is a bit different than what you’d expect after seeing Samsung’s Galaxy Fold and Huawei’s Mate X. It’s basically a second display for the V50 ThinQ, LG’s 5G flagship smartphone. According to a new report, LG will release the Dual Screen V50 ThinQ in South Korea later this week.

It did feel like LG is gearing up to roll out the Dual Screen V50 in its home country of South Korea. The company has ramped up the marketing efforts for this variant of the device, something I noticed when I was in Korea last week. There were plenty of advertisements about it on local TV networks.

It’s basically a display case for the V50 ThinQ so you’ll essentially have two separate displays in one single case. LG did confirm at MWC 2019 that it will not be possible to go full screen across both panels so it will actually be used as a separate display. It’s not as good as the V50’s own 6.4 inch 3120×1440 resolution panel as the display case only gets a 6.2 inch 2160×1080 resolution panel.

However, it will prove to be useful in some cases, gaming is a prime example. LG has made a Game Pad app that can be used to turn the display into a game controller while the second panel is used for the actual gameplay. The report out of South Korea mentions that the company will begin selling this device locally by May 10th.
