The good news is that it looks like Apple could still be thinking about fingerprint technology. In a recently discovered patent by Patently Apple, it appears that the company is still exploring the possibility of an in-display fingerprint sensor. The patent talks about how biometric imaging could be used in a variety of surfaces, including when embedded into the display of a device like a smartphone.
Before Face ID was introduced, it was rumored that Apple could be looking to introduce in-display fingerprint tech to their iPhones, but that did not pan out. Apple later claimed that they were always intending to go with Face ID and that fingerprint tech was never part of their plan. However, this isn’t to say that in the future, Apple might be looking to provide alternatives to customers who might want them.
In the meantime, some of Apple’s competitors have since introduced in-display fingerprint sensors to their handsets, such as the Samsung Galaxy S10 which uses Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint tech to power the feature.
