As some of you might be aware, Sony hasn’t been having the greatest of runs in the smartphone market for the past couple of years. This has been reflected in the company’s shipments for the previous quarter. Sony’s smartphone shipments fell to a record low in the first quarter of this year.
The company had previously forecasted shipments of 10 million units for the fiscal year ending March 2019. It later revised this figure down to 9 million and later to 7 million. It was revised once again in January this year to 6.5 million. That’s how many smartphones Sony has been able to ship in Q1 2019.
Compare this to the almost 40 million units that Sony shipped during fiscal 2014 and you get an idea of how hard the company has taken a hit in the smartphone market. Breaking the numbers up by quarters offers more insight into its troubles. The company reportedly shipped a record low of 1.1 million units during the first three months of this year.
No wonder that the Japanese conglomerate’s smartphone business has been bleeding money, an estimated $869 million so far. Sony has been trying to consolidate operations by laying off staff and cutting the operating expenses by 50 percent in order to turnaround the smartphone business. Whether or not it will be able to do that remains to be seen.
