Tesla has continued to make improvements to the Model S ever since the electric car was introduced in 2012. It offers larger battery packs, all-wheel drive, dual-motors, and more. However, it hasn’t been possible to drive the car from Los Angeles to San Francisco on a single charge. That changes as the new Model S will be able to do just that.
Tesla has confirmed that the 2019 Model S and Model X have extended range of 370 miles and 325 miles respectively. This means that the Model S can now comfortably make a trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco on a single charge. Tesla points out that this beats its previous records for mileage per charge with the same 100kWh battery pack.
Both models get Tesla’s latest drive unit technology which combines an optimized permanent magnet synchronous reluctance motor, silicon carbide power electronics with better lubrication, bearings and gear designs as well as cooling. This allows them to achieve over 93 percent efficiency.
The up to 10 percent improvement in range is achieved by coupling the permanent magnet motor in the front with an induction motor in the back. This offers bidirectional performance gains since energy flows out of the battery during acceleration and then back into the battery via regenerative braking. Tesla has also announced faster charging on V3 and V2 Superchargers up to 200kW and 145kW. All existing Model S and Model X owners who want to buy a Model S or Model X Performance will get the Ludicrous Mode upgrade, which costs $20,000, for free as a thank you from Tesla.
