Memorialized Facebook Profiles Get New Tributes Section

Your memory could continue to live on Facebook even after you’ve passed. The social network allows the creation of memorialized profiles of people who have died. It’s now expanding that functionality by adding a new tributes section to the pages. This would enable friends and family members of the deceased to continue posting memories of the departed on their pages.

Facebook mentions that more than 30 million people view memorialized profiles every month to post stories, commemorate milestones, and just remember those who have passed away. The tributes section expands on this by creating a separate tab on these profiles. It will enable friends and family to share posts while the original timeline of the deceased is preserved.

Facebook added the ability to choose a legacy contact back in 2015. This feature lets a family member or an entrusted friend to manage the user’s Facebook account after they pass away. Facebook is now expanding the controls for legacy contacts. They will be able to moderate the posts shared to the new tributes section by removing tags, changing tagging settings, and editing who can post and see posts. “This helps them manage content that might be hard for friends and family to see if they’re not ready,” the company explains.

The social network is also relying on artificial intelligence to ensure that once an account is memorialized, it doesn’t show up in places that might cause distress. For example, that account won’t be recommended as someone to invite to an event or their birthday reminder won’t be sent to their friends.
