While it has been possible to pay in store and through the iOS app at JCPenney using Apple Pay, that will no longer be the case. The retail chain has confirmed that it has dropped Apple Pay support. The move has been rather abrupt and no concrete information has been offered as to why it decided to do this.
JCPenney first ran a pilot program with Apple Pay back in November 2015. It took a couple of years before support was rolled out to stores nationwide in 2017. JCPenney’s credit card was later made available through Apple’s service as well.
JCPenney no longer accepts Apple Pay as of this weekend either in its iOS app or in one of its many stores across the country. It didn’t send out an official confirmation saying that this change has been made.
It did address the matter in response to a query from a customer on Twitter. The official Ask JCPenny Twitter account confirmed that “JCPenney made the decision to remove Apple Pay for our stores.” Once again, no explanation was offered as to why this decision was made to remove support for a popular mobile payments platform. Hopefully, the retailer will clear all of this up soon.
