It has been almost four years since Aston Martin confirmed that it was building an all-electric sports car. It has now unveiled the Aston Martin Rapide E at the Shanghai Auto Show. The vehicle is based on the Aston Martin Rapide sedan, the existing combustion engine-powered sports car. Availability will be extremely limited.
The vehicle features an 800 volt 65kWh battery which, according to the company, should enable the Rapide E to cover a distance of over 200 miles on a single charge. There are twin motors on the rear axle which generate 450kW, that’s around 600 horsepower, and will propel the car to a top speed of 155 miles per hour. Aston Martin claims that the Rapide E will be able to hit 0 to 60 miles per hour in just under four seconds.
The car looks quite the same as the combustion Rapide that it’s based on. There are some electric blue accents which highlight its fully electric nature. There’s also going to be a 10 inch digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel with an 8 inch display mounted above the center of the dasboard for infotainment purposes.
Aston Martin has confirmed that it will only make 155 units of its first fully electric car. It hasn’t revealed the price at this point in time so it’s unclear just how much a Rapide E is going to cost those 155 customers.
