Apple Is Researching MagSafe-Like Charging Cables

Many were undoubtedly disappointed when Apple opted to replace the MagSafe charging adapter in favor of USB-C. This is because the MagSafe adapter used magnets to connect the cable to laptops like the MacBook Pro, making it easy to detach when tripped on. At the same time, it is understandable that Apple would want to make the move to USB-C.

This is due to the convenience that USB-C offers where you can connect a monitor to the laptop and charge it at the same time with a single cable. However, there is some good news because it looks like despite killing off MagSafe, Apple is continuing to research magnetic cables for charging.

This is according to a recently discovered patent for “Smart Charging Systems for Portable Electronic Devices” that describes a system that uses magnets in cables to prevent damage if they get tugged on. According to Apple, “The smart charging system includes a magnetized connector and a charging component that can be configured to dynamically attract and repel the connector to and from the portable electronic device.”

Of course, there’s no way to confirm if Apple will actually make this a reality. However, it is heartening to see that Apple hasn’t completely given up on MagSafe yet, but when exactly we will see it implemented remains to be seen.
