Apple confirmed last month that its mobile payments service, Apple Pay, is going to work with transit systems in major U.S. cities this year. It was later reported that New York City will run an Apple Pay pilot for transit on a couple of lines in the spring this year before rolling it out to additional lines throughout the year.
There won’t be such a wait for Singapore where transit support has already gone live. TransitLink confirmed that Apple Pay now works on any transit method in Singapore that supports Mastercard. It added that support for Visa will be coming in the second half of this year.
There are some cities in the United States where Apple Pay is already accepted for transit, they include Chicago and Portland. Users will soon be allowed to use preloaded Ventra and Hop cards to the iOS Wallet app in those markets as well.
Both cards are reportedly going to support Express Transit which gives users an option to bypass the need to use Touch ID, Face ID, or a passcode. The Express Transit functionality has previously been available in China and Japan. Apple will finally be bringing it Stateside, it seems, in the not too distant future.
