Apple Almost Bought Intel’s Smartphone Modem Business

apple logoFor the past few years, Intel has been making modems for smartphones where the company has supplied handset makers such as Apple with their modems. Now there have been some talks in the past about Apple potentially looking to develop their own modem, and it seems that they almost had a helping hand from Intel.

In a report from the Wall Street Journal, the publication claims to have heard from people familiar with the matter that Apple and Intel were actually in talks about Apple possibly acquiring Intel’s smartphone modem business. However, these talks happened some time ago and those talks have since cooled, so it looks like the deal may no longer be happening.

However, it is interesting because recent reports had claimed that Apple was struggling to find suppliers for 5G components for future iPhones, which could potentially delay the launch of the handset. This was due to ongoing litigation with Qualcomm in which Apple was forced to seek out other suppliers (without much luck, we might add).

The lawsuit between both companies has since been settled and it was reported that Qualcomm will now supply the tech to Apple for its 2020 iPhones, and in an interesting turn of events, Intel also announced that they would be exiting the 5G smartphone modem business.
