The players on top esports teams for titles like Dota 2 are quite literally the masters of their craft. Millions of people tune into their matches just to see how some of the best players in the world tackle the game. One such team, OG, won Valve’s 2018 International but it couldn’t win a best-of-three exhibition match against OpenAI Five.
The AI beat the veteran Dota 2 team in the match. OpenAI Five beat five players from OG. It was able to do that by relying on aggressive and unconventional strategies which included instant revivals for heroes in the early stages and picking valuable heroes. OG did put up a good fight as the first round lasted well over 30 minutes but it was the AI that emerged victorious in the end.
OpenAI used the exhibition to demonstrated that the AI could not only play alongside human players but also learn from their gameplay styles. OpenAI is now allowing people to try out their skills against the machine.
It’s taking registrations for a chance to challenge the AI in co-op and versus modes between April 18th and April 22nd. If anything, the result of the match against OG should be indication enough that the machine isn’t here to take any prisoners.
