Magenta introduced the T-Mobile One plans back in 2016 which replaced the Simple Choice plans. Many of the carrier’s customers are still on the old plans and it seems that a subset of them are being given a very useful update for free. T-Mobile is upgrading some of the Simple Choice customers to unlimited data for free.
T-Mobile has sent out messages to the “loyal T-Mobile customers” who have been selected for this promotion that their voice lines will be upgraded to unlimited high-speed smartphone data at no extra cost starting March 16th. The messages contain a link for additional information and the option to opt-out, though that’s not something most of these customers would be doing.
It’s unclear what the criteria for selecting these users was but they mostly appear to be subscribers with 4GB+ plans. There don’t seem to be any significant caveats but it’s pertinent to mention here that this change won’t apply to any hotspot or tethering data or even data only lines. Furthermore, the previous data limits will remain in place in Mexico and Canada.
Lines that subscribers added to their plan later won’t receive this free upgrade. Selected customers who wish to opt out of this upgrade can fill the dedicated form on T-Mobile’s website to do so.
