One day in the future, self-driving cars will become commonplace. There are many benefits to self-driving cars, such as reduced accidents and also potentially reduced traffic jams since these cars can regulate themselves. However we imagine that future is still several years away, but in the meantime self-driving shuttles could help us make that transition.
In fact, over in New York City, Optimus Ride has announced that they will be introducing self-driving shuttles in the second quarter of the year. This will be quite limited in terms of availability where the shuttles will only be deployed in a 300-acre development in Brooklyn. It is aimed at the 400 businesses that operate there where there are also about 9,000 people employed.
This should make a pretty decent testing ground for the service where it will help shuttle people within a geofenced location. According to Optimus Ride CEO and co-founder Dr. Ryan Chin, “We are excited to announce not one but two self-driving vehicle deployments today. Working with leading developments and communities like Paradise Valley Estates and the Brooklyn Navy Yard enable us to further our mission to transform mobility.
“We’re pleased to be the first company to launch a self-driving vehicle program in the state of New York and, having now announced three deployments in the first quarter of 2019, are well positioned as the leader in self-driving systems for geofenced areas.” New York City won’t be the first to use self-driving shuttles.
Previously we had heard how countries such as Singapore are also trialing a similar system.
