Microsoft Launches Revamped Skype For Web, Only Works In Edge And Chrome

Accessing Skype through the web isn’t exactly new. However Microsoft has since launched an updated and revamped version of the chat client where if you’re using a computer without Skype installed, you’ll still be able to access some of its features through your browser. However there is a catch.

If you’re using any other browser besides Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome, it seems that Skype for web won’t work. This pretty much covers all other browsers such as Apple’s Safari, Mozilla’s Firefox, and Opera. This was confirmed in a statement made to VentureBeat where due to features like calling and real-time media and how different browsers implement such technology, Microsoft has decided to only support Edge and Chrome for now.

It is unclear as to whether or not Microsoft will eventually roll out support for other browsers, but if you absolutely have to use Skype, then we suggest either downloading the dedicated desktop client or use a different browser.

The latest version of Skype for the web will bring about new and improved features, such as HD video calling, call recording, notifications panel, the ability to search within conversations, and also a chat media gallery where users will be able to access links and photos that have been sent/received.
