The company has recently pushed out an update to Windows 7 where it appears that they will start to actively remind users that support for Windows 7 will be ending. According to Microsoft, “After 10 years of servicing, January 14, 2020, is the last day Microsoft will offer security updates for computers running Windows 7 SP1. This update enables reminders about Windows 7 end of support.”
To Microsoft’s credit, the company has warned that support for Windows 7 will be coming to an end, but we suppose actively reminding users when it will end will hopefully encourage users to upgrade to the latest version. While Windows 7 will continue to be functional and usable after January 14, 2020, don’t expect the company to update it any further which includes security updates that will keep your computer safe from malware and exploits.
That being said, Microsoft has stated that they will extend support to 2023 for users who need it, such as companies who might still be using systems that still rely on Windows 7. However users who need extended support will have to pay for it.
