Given the size of the AirPods, it means that their included batteries are pretty small which also means that charging them to full won’t take as long compared to a phone, tablet, or laptop. According to Apple’s current speeds, it will take the AirPods 15 minutes of charging to add an extra 3 hours of battery life, which is pretty decent.
However according to a rumor shared on Twitter by Max Weinbach, that could change with the AirPods 2 where it could feature even faster charging than before. According to Weinbach, he claims that the new AirPods will actually charge from 0 to 100% in as little as 15 minutes! If true then this represents a significant upgrade over its predecessor.
What’s even more unbelievable is that Weinbach claims that the new AirPods will achieve those speeds using wireless charging. We know that Apple has been working on a wireless charging case for the AirPods, so that bit isn’t news. However wireless charging has been known to be slower compared to wired, so the fact that the AirPods 2 charges faster than its predecessor using wireless charging does raise some eyebrows.
It is possible that Apple’s AirPower charging mat could offer supercharged wireless charging speeds, hence the delays, but either way it’s probably best to take it with a grain of salt for now. It could also be a good idea to hold off on the first-gen AirPods as the AirPods 2 is said to be close to being announced.
So the Apple news. AirPods wireless charging will happen. It will be VERY fast (0-100 in 15 minutes.) That speed is for the AirPods AND the case. It will probably use Qi charging.
There will be a downside though, the case will be bigger in one direction and heavier.
