In fact in a recent update to the macOS platform, Apple has announced that macOS will now support AMD Radeon RX 560 eGPUS, such as Sonnet’s Radeon RX 560 eGFX Breakaway Puck. Support for the RX 560 was spotted in last year’s macOS beta, but for some reason Apple later removed it.
However, we should note that despite macOS now supporting the RX 560, there will be certain limitations. This includes playback of HDCP-protected content from iTunes along with unnamed streaming services where they will not be supported on displays directly connected to the eGPU. It is unclear why that is, but such content can continue to be viewed on the device that you’re working on, whether it be a MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, or iMac.
The Sonnet Radeon RX 560 eGFX Breakaway Puck is currently priced at $399 on Amazon where it might be worth checking out if you’re looking for added GPU support.
