Some of the most popular accounts on Instagram were taken by surprise when they appeared to have lost millions of followers for no apparent reason. The Facebook-owned company has taken notice of the matter and said that it’s now investigating the issue.
“We’re aware of an issue that is causing a change in account follower numbers for some people right now,” Instagram confirmed on Twitter, adding that “We’re working to resolve this as quickly as possible.”
The issue became widely known when some Instagram users who have amassed a significant following on the platform started tweeting about losing millions of followers out of the blue. A report mentioned the possibility that this might be the result of actions that the company recently took to remove millions of accounts that it believed to be inauthentic.
However, whether or not this was the reason for this issue remains to be seen, particularly since Instagram’s tweet that it was working to resolve the matter. The company subsequently tweeted last night that the matter should be resolved by 12PM ET on February 14th. It didn’t elaborate on the cause behind the issue or the work that it has done to ensure that people get their followers back.
