Respawn, best known for their work on the Titanfall series, has recently released a free-to-play battle royale game in the form of Apex Legends which is also based on the Titanfall franchise. It turns out that despite the battle royale genre being so competitive and saturated, Respawn’s name seems to carry a bit of weight.
This is because according to the company’s CEO Vince Zampella, he has announced via Twitter that Apex Legends has managed to rack up 1 million players in under 8 hours of the game going live. We can only assume that this is because of Respawn’s name and reputation, and also the fact that this is a spinoff of Titanfall which has its own dedicated fanbase.
The bigger question is whether or not it will be able to sustain that 1 million player count and grow it, or if the hype will eventually die out. At the moment Epic’s Fortnite Battle Royale is pretty much the game to beat in the battle royale genre, so Respawn definitely has its work cut out for them.
The bad news for Titanfall fans is that Respawn has confirmed that Titanfall 3 is not in the works at the moment where the company is choosing to focus on Apex Legends for now.
