It’s not hard to imagine that robots could take over our jobs some day. After all robots don’t need rest, they don’t sleep, they don’t eat, which means that they could work 24/7 which is definitely more efficient than humans. This has led some to express concern that one day humans could be out of a job.
In fact it was predicted that by 2020, robots could easily take over 5 million jobs, but it seems that we needn’t get so worried just yet. According to a report from Bloomberg, it cites the World Bank’s chief economist Pinelopi Koujianou Goldberg who states that we aren’t necessarily in any danger of our jobs being taken over by robots just yet.
According to Goldberg, “This fear that robots have eliminated jobs — this fear is not supported by the evidence so far.” He adds, “This is the fourth industrial revolution, there have been three before, and in each case we managed to survive so it’s not the case that machines completely eliminated humans. Eventually, we will adjust.”
Of course this isn’t to say that robots haven’t already replaced humans in some fields, such as in the manufacturing industry, but maybe Goldberg is right, and that while robots could eventually take over some jobs, we will adapt, and that maybe more types of jobs could open up in the future as well.
