This test has been confirmed to TechCrunch in which the company stated that a small percentage of iOS and Android users will notice the new tag. According to Twitter’s Director of Product Management Sara Haider, “Twitter’s purpose is to serve the public conversation. As part of this work, we’re exploring adding more context to discussions by highlighting relevant replies – like those from the original Tweeter.”
This feature is reminiscent of WhatsApp’s “forwarded” tag, where messages that have been forwarded will contain a tag that makes it clear that the message might not have been crafted by the sender. As TechCrunch notes, this feature will also make it easier for users to determine the person who is posting and commenting on a thread, especially since Twitter seems to play home to quite a few accounts that attempt to pass themselves off as someone else.
There is no word on when the feature will be rolled out to all users, but it might be something to keep an eye out for in the future.
