Tesla Enters Model 3 Into Serious Hacking Contest Pwn2Own

Pwn2Own is a serious hacking competition that takes place every year. Security researchers from across the globe compete to crack browsers, enterprise applications, virtualization software, server-side software, and now automobiles in exchange for rewards. Tesla has entered the Model 3 into the contest to ensure that it remains safe from a cybersecurity point of view. The winning security researcher will walk away with a Model 3.

Pwn2Own’s latest competition takes place in Vancouver from March 20th to March 22nd. It’s run by TrendMicro’s Zero Day Initiative which chooses the software products which security researchers will try to crack. These are products from the likes of Google, Apple, Mozilla, Microsoft, Oracle, and others.

Tesla does encourage security researchers to try and look for vulnerabilities. It launched its first bug bounty program back in 2014. It also increased the maximum reward payment to $15,000 from $10,000 last year. All of the company’s vehicles, directly hosted servers, services, and apps are covered in the bounty program.

It will surely be interesting to see if any of the researchers present at the competition are able to find any vulnerabilities on the Model 3. There’s a significant incentive for them to try their best as the winning researcher will be able to go home with a Model 3 car.
