Spotify, the most widely used music streaming service in the world, today announced that it has inked a global content deal with Indian music company T-Series. The deal comes ahead of Spotify’s launch in the Indian market. It brings more than 160,000 songs present in T-Series’ catalog to Spotify for streaming.
The entire Indian song catalog of T-Series is now available through Spotify. It includes regional movie and Bollywood soundtracks, non-film albums, and content from emerging artists. There are more than 160,000 songs in its catalog so there’s going to be quite a lot of content to go through for T-Series fans.
This deal doesn’t come as a surprise. Both Spotify and T-Mobile were reportedly in discussions over it for quite some time now. Spotify is negotiating with the top labels in India before launching its service in the emerging market. It’s discussed potential deals with other labels like Zee Music and Times Music as well.
Having a lot of local content is a good way for the streaming service to ensure that it will have something to offer to the locals when it launches in India. The catalog will also be available to subscribers in other markets. However, it’s not going to be easy obtaining market share in the country. India already has local music streaming services one of which is Gaana that has more than 80 million users. Spotify will be up against all of them.
