Netflix as an entertainment service that provides video streaming to their customers definitely has their fair share of competitors in the form of Amazon, Hulu, HBO, and let’s not forget Disney who is planning on launching their own service later this year. However interestingly enough, Netflix doesn’t necessarily view them as big of a competition compared to Fortnite.
Yes, we’re talking about Epic’s Fortnite Battle Royale, the game that managed to capture everyone’s attention back in 2018. This was revealed during Netflix’s earnings report for 2018 where the report wrote, “We compete with (and lose to) Fortnite more than HBO.” It’s not because Fortnite offers video streaming, but rather in terms of entertainment, Fortnite represents an alternative to Netflix.
Since we have only one set of eyes, we usually have to choose to watch TV, or play a video game. While you can have the TV on while you play your games, it’s presumably not what companies like Netflix wants. Netflix also gave an example of how when YouTube went down for a few minutes last year, viewings and signups on Netflix went up.
Netflix has also recently raised the prices of its subscriptions where the company had stated that this was to help cover the costs of the company’s increasing investment into original shows and movies.
