Folks in Los Angeles may be able to make fare payments using Apple Pay before the end of this year. A new report claims that the rail and bus transit system of the city should allow riders to pay fares using Apple Pay this fall.
MacRumors reports that Los Angeles Metro is working with Apple to bring support for Apple Pay. This transit agency manages the integration of the TAP card system in the Los Angeles Area. Support for Apple Pay is reportedly scheduled to roll out this fall. The scribe mentions that it obtained this information through a public information request filed under California law.
Support for Apple Pay is part of a major update to the TAP system that’s currently underway. The update includes fare boxes across the transit system which get real-time data about fares purchased by the public online. There will also be a new TAP mobile app and Wallet which should debut in late summer. The system will eventually support Android phones with NFC as well for mobile payments.
Once Apple Pay support goes live, commuters will be able to pay their fares simply be holding a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch near a TAP card reader. The process will be similar to how Apple Pay is used for in-store purchases. LA would thus join the list of a handful of other cities where Apple’s mobile payments service can be used to pay public transportation fares.
