WSJ Thinks The iPhone Might Become Obsolete Like The Walkman

Apple has had success with a variety of products in its history, such as the colorful iMac G3, the iPod, and in recent years, the iPhone which helped the company grow to the point where for a brief moment in time, Apple was a trillion dollar company. However as the market matures and with competition coming out with cheaper and more value for money devices, it’s not surprising to see the demand for the iPhone is weakening.

However could it get to the point where the iPhone might eventually become obsolete like Sony’s Walkman? That’s what a recent report from the Wall Street Journal seems to imply, where they say that just like the Walkman, the pager, the Palm Pilot, and Polaroid, the iPhone could possibly become obsolete one day.

The report points out some examples of companies in the past who were once considered giants of the industry, such as Kodak, Polaroid, and Sears, but claims that these companies held on too tightly to an old idea. In a way that could also be said of Nokia who might have gotten in on smartphones a bit too late.

Now this isn’t to say that Apple is in danger or that the iPhone is close to being obsolete, but it does bring up a good point. That being said, Apple does seem to be exploring things outside of the iPhone, where during a recent interview with CNBC, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook stated that the company had new services they planned on launching in 2019. Cook also revealed how the company’s wearables had a revenue that surpassed that of the iPod during its peak.
