Netflix had confirmed early on in 2018 that dystopian fiction show Black Mirror has been renewed for a fifth season, much to the pleasure of the show’s fans. Netflix had picked up the show from Charlie Brooker and executive producer Annabel Jones after it was launched on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom. The third and fourth seasons were premiered on its platform. With 2018 behind us, it goes without saying that Black Mirror season 5 will be released in 2019, but there’s a reason for that.
Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones did want to release the fifth season in 2018 but the decision was made to push it back because of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. It’s the first interactive choose-your-own-adventure experiment from Netflix and what better series to do it with than Black Mirror.
If you’ve seen it, you can imagine how much time would have gone into putting together this extremely complex episode. They had to film multiple endings and even they tend to have variations. Jones confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the “enormous” amount of time required for Bandersnatch compelled them to delay Black Mirror season 5 to 2019.
Details about the new season are slim at this point in time. Netflix is yet to confirm precisely when it will arrive and how many episodes it will have.
