Bethesda Dismisses Rumors That Fallout 76 Will Be Going Free-To-Play

In the MMORPG scene, it’s hard not to look at Blizzard’s World of Warcraft for inspiration. The game has been around for more than a decade, but yet continues to rake a ton of money in for the developer. This is versus other MMORPGs like Star Wars: The Old Republic and Wildstar, both of which initially adopted the subscription model, but later switched to free-to-play.

Recently there was speculation that Bethesda might be looking to adopt the free-to-play model for Fallout 76. This was based on rumors of shortages of the physical copy of the game over at EB Games in Australia, where some believed that this was Bethesda’s way of taking the game free-to-play. However the developer has since shut down those rumors and claimed that they are false.

This was in response to a question from a customer who stated that if the game was going free-to-play that he would like his money back. That being said, Fallout 76 hasn’t exactly received the rave reviews that Bethesda was hoping for, at least not from a Fallout title in which previous releases like Fallout 4 and even Fallout Shelter were extremely well-received.

The game has also been embroiled in some controversies where gamers who bought the Power Armor Edition were given cheap nylon bags instead of the canvas bags that were promised. This was made worse when it was discovered that Bethesda had given social media influencers proper bags, making gamers who paid for the game feel shortchanged.
