DC’s movies don’t tend to pull in the kind of numbers that we have seen with Marvel productions but there have been a few exceptions. Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises has long been DC’s highest grossing movie ever, raking in $1.085 billion. That milestone has now been crossed by Aquaman. Another major weekend around the world has pushed the Jason Momoa-starrer to became the biggest DC comic movie ever.
Aquaman has been close to this milestone throughout the month of January. It was already in the second spot on the list of highest grossing DC comic movies. It has now reached a worldwide total of $1.09 billion, dethroning The Dark Knight Rises, which is arguably one of the best comic movies that DC and Warner Bros. have ever made.
However, the performance of DC’s comic movies pales in comparison to that of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Aquaman might be at the top of DC charts but it’s actually the seventh top-grossing comic book movie of all time. All of the top six spots are occupied by Marvel movies. Avengers: Infinity War has the top spot worldwide followed by the first Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron in the second and third spots, respectively.
Aquaman is yet to beat The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises when it comes to the domestic box office with its $316 million in collections. Compare that to another Marvel movie, Black Panther, which leads the domestic box office with a whopping $700 million.
