Volkswagen Unveils Mobile EV Charging Station

Until the day comes when electric car chargers are readily and easily available everywhere, we imagine that it might take some convincing for people to adopt electric cars. However for those with range-anxiety, it seems that Volkswagen might have the answer in the form of a mobile EV charging station.

This is basically an EV charging station that is somewhat portable, which means that it could be transported to various locations where there might not be any EV chargers. For example it could be brought to festivals or events where it could be placed in the parking lot where EVs could charge their cars using it.

Volkswagen’s mobile EV charging station will feature 360kWh charging capacity and 100kW DC quick charging that will be capable of topping up 15 EVs, with an average charging time of 17 minutes. This device while clearly designed to be portable, can also be transformed into a permanent station. It can also be recharged using green energy from solar or wind power, meaning that this battery is as green as it gets, and could potentially help take the burden off electric grids during peak hours, which is a similar concept Tesla envisioned for its home battery.

That being said, there doesn’t seem to be plans to roll it out anytime soon. A pilot program is expected to take place in the town of Wolfsburg in the first half of 2019, and might only begin expanding in 2020.
