The other day it was reported that a couple of rogue drones were spotted flying around Gatwick Airport in London, resulting in flights being grounded while the authorities tried to figure out a way to bring the drones down and to locate the drone operators who were clearly in big trouble over this.
Turns out that it didn’t take them too long to locate their suspects. An announcement by the Sussex Police has revealed that the police have since managed to arrest two people who were suspected to be involved in the incident. According to Superintendent James Collis, “As part of our ongoing investigations into the criminal use of drones which has severely disrupted flights in and out of Gatwick Airport, Sussex Police made two arrests just after 10pm on 21 December.”
He adds, “The arrests we have made this evening are a result of our determination to keep the public safe from harm, every line of enquiry will remain open to us until we are confident that we have mitigated further threats to the safety of passengers.” Drone disruptions at airports was something that authorities have always expressed concern over, and this is a prime example of what could happen.
There was a previous report in which it was revealed that a drone might have crashed with a plane mid-air, although thankfully apart from damage to the nose of the plane, there were no other injuries.
