The microtransaction model is one that is very popular and is a great way for developers and publishers to continue pulling in revenue long after the game is sold. This is why it doesn’t really come as a surprise to learn that Rockstar has recently started to sell in-game currency for Red Dead Online for real money.
For those who are unfamiliar, Red Dead Online uses two types of in-game currency: cash and gold bars. These currencies are available in the game and prior to this, could be earned in-game by playing the game. However with the launch of the store, gamers can now purchase gold bars for real-life money.
There will be an introductory offer where gamers can purchase 25 gold bars for $4.99, which which it will be priced at $9.99. The most expensive option will be for 350 gold bars that are priced at $99.99. That being said, gold bars can still be earned in the game by playing it normally, so if you’d rather not spend money, then you can grind for it, but if you want to save your time, this will be a faster and more expensive option.
According to Rockstar’s in-game description of gold bars, “With Gold you can quickly unlock goods. From weapons to horse supplies to unique items for your camp. Gold Bars help you achieve the American dream of being first in line, stockpiling an arsenal, and shopping with abandon while becoming the envy of everyone around you.”
