Microsoft hasn’t released a webcam for the past few years but if a new report is to be believed, it may be making a return to this market next year. The report mentions that the company is working on multiple webcam models and that at least one of the new cameras, said to be 4K compatible, will work with both the Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs.
Citing two separate sources, Thurrott reports that one new Microsoft webcam for Windows 10 PCs will come with Windows Hello support. This will be the first time that Microsoft offers this authentication functionality on a standalone camera.
The new webcam may also provide Kinect-like features on the Xbox One. Some Xbox owners may miss those features as the peripheral is no longer sold for the console. It will allow users to sign in automatically by simply moving in front of the camera, it’s said. This could also work with multiple users so that ongoing game session can be joined by friends and family.
It’s also suggested that the webcams may be launched as part of Microsoft’s Surface hardware products next year. No further information is available right now about these webcams. It’s clear at this point in time how much they’re going to cost when they do arrive.
