For those who are unfamiliar with CloudMagic, they are the developers behind a popular email app called Newton Mail which was actually shut down in late September. Essential confirmed the acquisition in a statement to TechCrunch, but they did not dive into specifics regarding how much they acquired the company for, or what they plan to do with it.
The statement reads, “We are always on the lookout for companies with great technology and talent to help accelerate our product roadmap.” That being said, we wouldn’t be surprised if the Newton Mail app were to find a new lease on life as a native app in future Essential software updates to its smartphones.
This move isn’t entirely unprecedented because we’ve seen other companies make similar moves. For example Apple bought out Workflow which eventually became Siri Shortcuts, and how could we forget the acquisition of Beats Music that they later shutdown and where it was relaunched as Apple Music.
