Prior to Epic launching Fortnite Battle Royale, one of the games that the company was known for was the Unreal Tournament franchise, which back in the day was played on the same level as other competitive FPS games like Quake, Counter-Strike, Team Fortress, and so on. In fact there were even plans to develop a new Unreal Tournament game.
Unfortunately for fans of the franchise, it seems that you won’t be able to expect the game anytime soon. Speaking to Variety, Epic’s CEO and founder Tim Sweeney confirmed that the company was not actively developing the title at the moment. “‘Unreal Tournament’ remains available in the store but isn’t actively developed. We’ve recently worked with GOG on making classic Epic Games titles available and we’re planning to bring more of them to the store in their original glory.”
For those following the development of the new Unreal Tournament, you might have heard that back in September, a community manager for Epic mentioned that the game had been put on hold as the developer was focusing their efforts on Fortnite. Sweeney’s comments about three months later suggests that nothing has changed since then.
However this doesn’t mean that the game has been cancelled, but then again given that Fortnite’s popularity doesn’t seem to be dying down anytime soon, we’re not sure when Epic is expected to begin development of Unreal Tournament again.
