Elon Musk has made a considerable donation which will give Flint Community Schools the funds that it requires to purchase laptops for all seventh and eighth-grade students in the district. The donation of $423,600 has been made through the Elon Musk Foundation and it was announced at the school board’s recent meeting.
Musk established his foundation in 2002 with his brother Kimbal. The website states that grants are made through the foundation for causes which include renewable energy research and advocacy, science and engineering education, pediatric research in addition to human space exploration research and advocacy.
An earlier donation of $480,000 by the Elon Musk Foundation announced in October this year is being used to pay for water filtration systems in all 12 Flint school buildings as well as the administration building.
With this latest donation in hand, the district will be able to buy Chromebooks for middle school students. The students will be moving into the former Flint Northern High School as part of a secondary school restructuring plan.
The Chromebooks won’t just be available to the students while they’re at school. They will be able to take them home as well. Derrick Lopez, superintendent of Flint schools, confirmed that the students will be “able to take them home and use them as an instructional tool so that is power in and of itself.”
