When you think of smartphone cameras that are supposed to be good, you might think of brands such as Apple, Samsung, Huawei, and more recently even Google is giving these companies a run for their money. This means that in theory in a blind test, it should be pretty clear who the winners are, right?
Those are some of the assumptions many had when YouTuber MKBHD decided to run a blind smartphone camera test on his Instagram and Twitter pages, where he set it up in a bracket style competition and pitted 16 different phones against each other. These devices include the iPhone X, iPhone Xs, Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 3, the Huawei Mate 20 and P20 Pro, the LG V40, the BlackBerry KEY2, the OnePlus 6T, the Moto Z2, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, the HTC U12+, the RED Hydrogen, the Pocophone, the Razer Phone 2, and the recently launched Palm.
These are devices that were launched this year and the previous year, so safe to say that he had his bases covered. Like we said, you might have expected some of the phones to have been clear winners, but during the first stage, handsets like the iPhone X and Xs lost out to phones like the BlackBerry KEY2 and the Pocophone.
We also saw how the RED Hydrogen phone actually beat out the Huawei P20 Pro, and how the Pocophone beat the Note 9. In the end it was left between the Huawei Mate 20 and the Pocophone, which Huawei managed to emerge the winner. The results do seem controversial, but as MKBHD explains, it seems that most people tended to vote for the brighter photo with punchier colors.
This doesn’t mean that everything we know about smartphone cameras are wrong, but when uploading to social media which further compresses our images, a lot of features that makes a good camera good is lost in the process. If you have 20 minutes or so to spare, then you should definitely check it out.
