If you buy a product like a smartphone, tablet, computer, or TV, would you be annoyed if you started receiving messages from the company in question telling you to upgrade when a new model is out? We imagine that not everyone will be thrilled by this, but that’s more or less what Apple has been doing.According to some iPhone users, it seems that Apple is sending push notifications to iPhone users to remind them to upgrade their devices. iOS developer Steve Lederer shared a screenshot of such a notification, although it was pointed out that he received it as he was part of Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program.
In response to that Lederer states, “I guess so? But it still feels like an abuse of the push notification. Bottom line: people generally don’t like when stores send them unsolicited push notifications to get them to buy stuff. Feels like something Best Buy would do…not Apple Retail.”

The developer also points at the App Review guidelines where Apple clearly mentions how push notifications should be used. “Do not use Apple Services to spam, phish, or send unsolicited messages to customers, including Game Center, Push Notifications, etc.” Some point out how the notifications can be disabled, while others suggest that this sounds like Apple is desperate to drum up sales following reports of less-than-stellar sales of the new iPhones.
