In a report from 9to5Mac, Apple has been sending emails to artists informing them that Connect will be shutting down, although they have phrased it as their attempts to “streamline”. “Today we’re streamlining music discovery by removing Connect posts from Artist Pages and For You. This means you’ll no longer be able to post to Connect as of December 13, 2018, but all previously uploaded content will still be searchable until May 24, 2019. You can still create Artist Playlists with the latest version of Apple Music.”
If you have been using Apple’s services for a long time now, you might recall that this is actually the company’s second attempt at launching a social network related to music. Back in 2010, Apple launched a service called Ping which allowed users to follow their favorite artists to get updates on them, although much like Connect, Ping was a short-lived experiment as well.
That being said, Apple Music is still very much one of the more popular music streaming services around. Last we heard, the platform had managed to amass about 56 million subscribers, and considering that Apple Music has no free tier (save for the free trial), that’s a lot of money Apple is raking in on a monthly basis.
