Apple released watchOS 5.1 recently for its smartwatch. The new firmware update was supposed to bring new features to the device, including the EKG feature of the new Apple Watch Series 4. The company pulled the update after reports surfaced that it was bricking some units. It’s now rolling out watchOS 5.1.1 to address that issue.
The watchOS 5.1.1 update brings a handful of new features to the smartwatch such as group audio FaceTime, 70 new emoji characters, a full screen Color watch face for Series 4 models in addition to improvements for the fall detection feature.
Some Apple Watch Series 4 owners who updated to watchOS 5.1 when it was released complained that the update had left their units bricked. The smartwatch wouldn’t go past the Apple logo. This led Apple to pull the update to prevent additional devices from being bricked.
The company is now rolling out a new firmware update for its smartwatch. The watchOS 5.1.1 update fixes the bug that was causing some units to be bricked. Those who have an affected unit now need to get in touch with Apple as it’s sending out replacement units. They can’t be fixed and a replacement is absolutely necessary in this case even though the new update fixes that bug.
