Google added the adoptable storage feature to Android a few years back. It’s the feature that enables the handset to treat the external and internal storage as one unified drive. Samsung has never supported adoptable storage on its devices but that might change with its Android Pie.
According to a new report, Samsung might bring adoptable storage support to its handsets with the Android 9 Pie update. The company will be opening up the beta program later this month and has already confirmed at SDC 2018 last week that it will release Android Pie for the Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy S9 in January 2019.
A leaked Galaxy Note 9 Android Pie build has an option to format the microSD card and then use it as extended phone storage. This suggests that the Pie update might finally add the adoptable storage option to Samsung devices.
The feature doesn’t work well in this leaked build but it could be fixed in subsequent builds. Samsung won’t be offering a public beta program for the Galaxy Note 9 though. So owners of Samsung’s latest phablet will have to wait until January next year to get an official Pie build on their devices.
While many will question Samsung’s decision to hold off on this essential feature for quite a long time, others will be pleased that it has finally decided to support adoptable storage on its smartphones.
