Spotify started testing its official app for the Apple Watch earlier this month. The world’s largest music streaming service today announced that it has now launched its first app for Apple’s smartwatch. The app will enable users to access music on the Apple Watch and also control playback on compatible Spotify Connect devices.
The official Spotify app also has complications for the Apple Watch so that users can easily control playback from the watch face. The app doesn’t have the ability to sync songs for offline playback as yet, though.
It’s certainly not the most feature-packed streaming app for a smartwatch. It basically offers a better way to control Spotify playback on a paired iPhone or Spotify Connect speakers. It can’t stream music on the Apple Watch itself through the phone’s internet connection or the onboard LTE.
The complication will enable users to perform such tasks on the go from the watch screen. For example, if they come across a track that they like, users can just tap on the heart icon to save that track to their collection so that they can come back to it whenever they want.
The Spotify app will be rolling out for the Apple Watch over the coming week. The latest version of Spotify (v.8.4.79) will be required for the Apple Watch app.
