Apple Watch EKG Feature May Arrive With watchOS 5.1.2 Update

When Apple announced the Apple Watch Series 4, it showed off a feature that smartwatches from its rivals don’t have. The device has electrodes built into the back which allow users to take electrocardiogram or EKG measurements. The feature wasn’t available at launch and users have since been waiting for an update which will enable it. That update might be watchOS 5.1.2.

An Apple Store training document has been obtained by MacRumors which suggests that the Apple Watch Series 4 EKG feature is finally going to arrive with the upcoming watchOS 5.1.2 update. The document does not mention when Apple is going to release this update.

The feature will allow users to take EKG measurements using the electrodes built into the back of the device and its digital crown. It makes the smartwatch more capable of measuring and monitoring the users’ heart. Apple has Type II FDA clearance for it in the United States.

Apple itself had confirmed this in the past and the document also mentions that the EKG feature will only be available in regions where Apple has received approval. It only seems to have approval for the EKG feature in the United States right now so if you’re based elsewhere, watchOS 5.1.2 won’t bring this feature for you. However, it goes without saying that Apple is likely working to gain approval for this feature in other markets as well.
