Sprint VoLTE Soft Launched In A Few U.S. Markets

Sprint is finally doing what its competitors have already been doing. It’s now providing voice-over-LTE or VoLTE service in select markets across the country. The service is currently being soft launched so the markets are limited but its subscribers can rest assured that the number of supported markets will only go up from here.

With VoLTE, Sprint is going to replace Calling Plus, a VOIP app that Sprint provided as a temporary solution for LTE calling. With proper VoLTE service now rolling out, there’s obviously no need for that app anymore.

The service has been soft-launched in 15 U.S. markets and is currently compatible with three smartphones all of which are Samsung devices – the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, and the Galaxy S8 Active to be precise.

These handsets will receive a software update with the Android security patch for October 2018. The update is going to replace Calling Plus with VoLTE in supported markets. These are Atlanta-Athens, Chicago, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Houston, Indianapolis, Kansas, Missouri, New York City, Oregon-West Washington, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Francisco Bay, South Bay, Southern Jersey, and Washington DC.

Those who are in the aforementioned markets and have the supported devices can access VoLTE by enabling the feature from Voice networks inside the Connections menu of the Settings app.
