The Snapdragon 845 is the processor of choice for Android flagship smartphones this year. Its successor will power the flagships due next year but it appears that Qualcomm will switch up the nomenclature for its first chip built on the 7nm process technology. According to a new report, what was expected to be called the Snapdragon 855 might actually be called the Snapdragon 8150.
There’s a mention of the Snapdragon 8150 in a leaked Android 9.0 Pie build for the Galaxy S9 that has been floating around for a couple of weeks. The reference to this unannounced chip was discovered after the framework-res file of the leaked build was decompiled.
The references in the firmware file obviously don’t reveal much about the new chip. Its specs are not known but reports suggest that it will be Qualcomm’s first chip with a dedicated neural processing unit. What that means is that the device will be able to offer better performance for artificial intelligence applications as it will be able to process large quantities of data on device.
Qualcomm is yet to reveal any information about its next flagship processor, let alone confirm what it’s going to be called. The first smartphones powered by this chip will most likely arrive early next year.
