One of the star features of the Apple Watch Series 4 is its ability to take an Electrocardiogram or ECG right from the user’s wrist. The company confirmed when it started taking pre-orders for this smartwatch that the feature, which is only going to be available in the U.S. to begin with, won’t be available at launch. Several weeks after the smartwatch was released, its ECG feature is finally available now.
Apple is rolling out watchOS 5.1 today. The new software update for the smartwatch enables the Apple Watch Series 4’s ECG feature. It’s approved by the FDA in the United States. The Apple Watch Series 4 is the first smartwatch of its kind to offer the ability to take an Electrocardiogram right from your wrist.
Users will be able to get an ECG reading by placing their finger on the Digital Crown for 30 seconds. The app will then give them a reading. It can analyze the heart’s rhythms and inform the user if their heart has a regular or irregular rhythm.
All of the readings will be stored in the Apple Health app so that it can easily be shared with medical professionals should the need arise. As previously mentioned, this feature is only available for users in the U.S. It remains to be seen when Apple will be able to expand the Series 4’s ECG feature to more countries.
