Netflix Reportedly Consumes 15% Of The Global Internet Traffic

It is not hard to see why streaming services are steadily gaining ground. Back in the day if you wanted to watch a movie online, you’d have to pay for it upfront, and if you did not enjoy it then too bad. However streaming services allow users to watch any movie or TV show to their heart’s content for a fixed monthly price, saving users a ton of money in the process.

This is why it doesn’t come as a surprise to learn that Netflix could potentially be consuming 15% of the global internet’s traffic, at least according to bandwidth management company Sandvine (via Fast Company). The company claims that Netflix alone hogs about 15% of the world’s bandwidth and despite YouTube having been around much longer, YouTube is said to take up 11.4%, which is actually still a lot.

That being said, Sandvine’s report had also revealed that while Netflix is currently hogging a fair amount of the internet’s bandwidth, piracy is apparently back on the rise. It was previously reported that streaming services are actually to blame for this, where many of them try to come up with exclusive content which has resulted in users opting to pirate those shows, as opposed to subscribing to multiple services at once.
