Netflix is ditching some of its Marvel original series. Merely a week after the streaming giant announced that it won’t bring back Iron Fist for a third season, Netflix has confirmed that similar decision has been made for Luke Cage. There will be no third season of Marvel’s Luke Cage.
The second season of Luke Cage was released earlier this year. The presumption among fans was that it would be renewed for another season so that the story can move forward. That’s not going to be the case now.
Netflix and Marvel have confirmed to Deadline that Luke Cage is not going to return for a third season. They have taken many by surprise with this decision as it was expected that at least Luke Cage will survive to get to the third season.
It’s not surprising to see that Netflix and Marvel’s partnership is cooling off a bit. Disney has been working on its own streaming service which will take on Netflix. Disney will obviously want to leverage its catalog of original content to bring in subscribers which is one of the reasons why it decided to end its distribution deal with Netflix in 2017.
Some Marvel series remain on the platform, though. The third season of Daredevil was recently launched and both Jessica Jones and The Punisher have been renewed for a season each.
