According to Bethesda’s Pete Hines who spoke at PAX Australia over the weekend, it seems that bringing the game onto the Switch “wasn’t doable”. According to Hines, “The Switch is something I can say with certainty that it’s a part of every conversation with every dev we have now about what we’re doing going forward because we consider it to be a viable platform. If the game will work on it, we want it to be on every platform possible. Fallout 76 is not because it just wasn’t doable.”
Hines notes that they did discuss the possibility, and this is a possibility that they bring up with every game, but unfortunately in the case of the Switch it wasn’t possible. “But honestly, there is no game in development that we haven’t had a conversation about. ‘Does this work on the Switch, do you have a plan for the Switch?’ It’s not a mandate. Everything we do has to be developer-led, but it’s something we want to make sure is on folks’ radar.”
It is unclear as why this wasn’t possible, perhaps it could be due to the online mode required for Fallout 76, or maybe the console itself isn’t powerful enough to run the game, but either way if you wanted to play Fallout 76, the Switch isn’t one of the supported platforms, although it seems unlikely that will change anytime soon.
